Short Version
GPT-5 (OpenAI’s AI system) is rolling out to Copilot across Microsoft 365. Rollout began on 7th August 2025.
Details
Microsoft has begun rolling out GPT-5 to Copilot, starting with M365 Copilot chat for licensed users on Web, Windows, Mac and mobile.

GPT-5 in Microsoft Copilot replaces GPT-4 by offering much better reasoning, accuracy, and context awareness. Unlike GPT-4, which could handle basic tasks, GPT-5 is better at complex, multi-step instructions and integrates more deeply with Microsoft 365 apps, making tasks like drafting, summarising, and analysing faster and more precise.
Depending on your prompt, a real-time router will select the right model for you: either the high-throughput model for quick responses or the deeper reasoning model for complex, multi-step tasks.
What about Copilot Researcher? The GPT-5 deeper reasoning model does not replace Researcher, which you will still use to conduct in-depth research and generate structured insights.
Currently, in Copilot Chat you will see a new Try GPT‑5 toggle, when enabled, this allows you to opt into the enhanced capabilities powered by GPT‑5 for the current Copilot conversation. If a new chat is started, the toggle resets away from GPT-5.
