TL;DR
The way you add tabs to Microsoft Teams channels is changing, the Add a tab + option has been replaced with new icon and side panel. Appears to be rolling out to early release now: mid-January 2025.
Details
At the time of writing, this update has not appeared in my tenant’s message centre, but the change has appeared in Teams. It may be that this change is only rolling out to users with early access to new features…to be confirmed. The below screenshots are from Teams version 25007.606.3361.4724.
Before this change, to add a tab to a channel, you would select the Add a tab + symbol to the right of the channel tabs, which would open the Add a tab pop-up window:
After this change, you will no longer see the Add a tab + symbol, it is being replaced by the new Open Apps icon in the top right corner of the window:
When you select the Open App icon, a new side panel opens (instead of the Add a tab pop-up window) to reveal the apps available to add as tabs:
The Manage apps icon in the bottom left corner of the above screenshot takes you to the Manage Team > Apps screen.
When you select an app, you see the option to pin it as a tab. In this case, I have selected the Website app (I suspect someone at Microsoft has rushed this control as the word ‘for’ is duplicated):
When you select 📌 Pin a tab for… you will see the set-up window you are familiar with:
Once you save your new tab, it appears to behave and is managed as before.
