The free version of Microsoft Copilot you may see at work will soon be upgraded to include Enterprise Data Protection and other changes. Due mid-September to mid-October 2024.

There are several changes coming to the free version of Microsoft Copilot you may be using at work. They should enhance data security, privacy, and compliance and simplify the user experience:
- Copilot on the web users signed into Bing.com/chat and copilot.microsoft.com with a work account will be redirected to the simplified experience at Microsoft.com/copilot
- Microsoft recommend that organisations either pin, or allow users to pin, the Copilot icon so it appears on the left bar in apps across M365
- Your Copilot experience will be upgraded from Commercial Data Protection to Enterprise Data Protection

Question: “What is the difference between Enterprise Data Protection and Commercial Data Protection which has been in the product since it was Bing Chat Enterprise?”
Answer:
- “Prompts and responses will stay within the Microsoft 365 service boundary, and all associated data handling commitments will apply—including support for GDPR, and ISO/IEC 27018 (Copilot for Microsoft 365 runs on the ISO 27018 certified Microsoft 365 platform)
- Prompts and responses can be logged and have retention policies applied to them
- Prompt and responses will be available for eDiscovery and other Purview capabilities
- Commercial use of Microsoft Copilot will be covered by the Data Protection Addendum for all prompts and responses
- Ads will not be displayed in Copilot chat web scope”
There is no change for Copilot for Microsoft 365 graph-grounded chat or any Copilot experience in the Microsoft 365 productivity apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, which already benefit from Enterprise data protection.
