12th May 2023 Update from Microsoft: “Earlier this year we announced the grace period for several Microsoft Teams Premium features that were in preview, including live translated captions for meetings. Starting April 2023, a Teams Premium license is required to use this feature

License enforcement will be enabled in July 2023. Once licensing enforcement is enabled, the only users who will be able to access live translated captions for meetings are:

  • Individual users that are licensed with a Teams Premium license
  • Meeting attendees who attend a meeting where the meeting organizer is licensed with a Teams Premium license (feature available for that single meeting)”.

TL;DR:
Microsoft Teams can provide Live Captions so you can read what is being said in real time. Live translation is being added to the capability so you can read along in your preferred language. Due mid-September to early-October 2022.

Details:
Today, you can select just the spoken language, and the Live Captions will be displayed in that language.

When this new feature is released, if you have turned on Live Captions you will see the menu options for Live Translated Captions in the “Subtitles” menu.

The spoken language is selected for everyone in the meeting, while the translation language for the Live translated Captions is selected only for the individual user.

List of supported translation languages:

Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, French (Canada), German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.
