Short Version
Planner Agent chat is coming to Microsoft Planner basic plans, letting you ask questions about your plans, understand priorities, and take action without leaving Planner. Due late August to late September 2026.

Once this rolls out, you’ll be able to open Planner Agent chat directly within a basic plan and ask questions about plan status, priorities, and upcoming work. To open it, create or open a basic plan in Planner, then select the Copilot button in the bottom right corner of your plan:
You can ask questions to understand the state of your work, for example “What are my highest priority tasks?”, “Summarise progress this week”, or “What tasks are blocked?” Planner Agent pulls together multiple pieces of information from your plan to answer, and will automatically adjust your view to focus on the tasks most relevant to your question. This doesn’t change your plan itself, just your view of it, and you can toggle the AI-generated filter off at any time by selecting the filter pill, or remove it entirely to reprompt.
Beyond answering questions, you can also ask the agent to help create or refine plan content, such as drafting new tasks, breaking down work, or revising outputs based on your feedback. For the best results, be specific about what you want, reference relevant files or content by typing / in your prompt, and iterate with follow-up prompts rather than trying to get everything in one go.
Planner Agent will also surface insights about high-priority work, upcoming deadlines, and at-risk tasks, and you can ask it to create new plans organised by goals and buckets. It can pull in information from other Microsoft 365 resources, such as emails, meetings, and files, when helping you work with a plan.
You’ll need an active Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, and your organisation will need to allow access to Planner Agent. One thing worth knowing: at the time of writing, Microsoft’s own documentation notes that Planner Agent chat in basic plans is currently available only to organisations enrolled in the Frontier programme, ahead of a wider general availability rollout, so don’t be surprised if it isn’t visible yet even once your tenant reaches the rollout window in this post.
