Short Version
Teams will soon have a setting to prevent the Enter key from accidentally sending chat messages. Due mid to late February 2026.

Details
When you are composing a chat message in Teams, the default Enter key behaviour is to send the message. This often results in a short communication split across multiple messages, or a panicked scramble by the sender to delete or edit the message sent prematurely.

To address this, Microsoft is adding a new setting in Microsoft Teams that lets you choose what happens when you press Enter while composing a message. The default setting will remain ‘Send the message’, with a new option: ‘Start a new line’. Regardless of what you choose, Shift + Enter will always insert a new line.

The new setting will appear under Settings Chats and channels: “When writing a message, press Enter to”:

Also, as you create a new message in Chat, Teams will display the current behaviour of the Enter key.

Availability
Due mid to late February 2026.
