Short Version
Microsoft Teams is introducing new ‘last read’ and ‘newest’ jump buttons for chat messages, as well as customisable default behaviour. Due mid to late June 2025.

Teams will soon allow you to quickly jump to the newest chat message with a Jump to newest button:


Or, if you have already landed on the newest message (see below), you can quickly go to your last read message with the Jump to last read button:


You will also be able to select your preferred default behaviour by going to Settings > Chats and channels > Chat > When I open a chat, take me to:
