TL;DR
Microsoft announced the new version of Teams in March 2023 and released a preview version for some of us to try. Since then, they have achieved feature parity for almost all features and new Teams is ready for us to use. It has been generally available since 5th October 2023.
Your organisation may decide exactly when it is made available to you, but the switch to New Teams will be mandatory at the end of March 2024.
Details
You will be automatically upgraded to new Teams in the coming months, between now and then look out for the ‘Try the new Teams’ slider in the top left corner of teams:
Microsoft highlight the follow improvements:
- A faster app optimised for performance on multiple platforms
- A simpler user experience that makes it easier to do more in fewer clicks
- A more flexible app for seamless cross-tenant communication and collaboration
- A smarter Teams app ready for ‘next-generation AI experiences’

Microsoft:
- “With the move to general availability, we would encourage you to upgrade to new Teams today. Upgrading to new Teams is quick and seamless — no migration is required!
- Administrators who currently have the Teams update policy set to ‘Not enabled’ for the ‘Use new Teams client’ setting, please take action. For a better experience, we suggest choosing ‘New Teams as default’ or ‘Microsoft controlled’.
- Classic Teams users will be automatically upgraded to new Teams in the coming months.
- To get started on your new Teams journey today, simply flip the toggle in the upper-left corner of the classic Teams app.
- For our enterprise customers, starting with Current Channel, this announcement marks the beginning of displaying the new Teams toggle to end users within the classic Teams app. We will soon begin making new Teams the default app for all Teams users based on our schedule, which is detailed on this page. The previous version of Teams will become known as ‘Microsoft Teams classic’.
Availability
From 5th October 2023 depending on your organisation’s policies…but probably by the end of 2023 for most people.
