Short Version
Copilot in SharePoint is an AI assistant that helps you create, organise, and manage SharePoint content using natural language within sites, pages, libraries, and lists. Due mid-June 2026.
Details
Copilot in SharePoint (formerly AI in SharePoint) will soon bring AI-powered capabilities across SharePoint sites, pages, libraries, lists, and chat, enabling you to create, edit, and maintain content “using natural language”. It will be available as a preview, which means that it is not quite the finished product, but you can use it if you have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, unless your organisation has opted out.
If you have an M365 Copilot license, similar to other M365 apps, you will see a floating Copilot button in the lower‑right corner of SharePoint pages, document libraries, and lists. Selecting the Copilot button opens a chat experience where you can prompt “using natural language”. As you would expect, Copilot in SharePoint works within your existing SharePoint permissions and only accesses content that you are authorised to view or edit.

Some of the things you’ll be able to do:
- If you have owner or edit permissions, you can build, edit, and maintain content in SharePoint by prompting in natural language, without requiring technical or design expertise.
- Copilot in SharePoint can execute content tasks for you, from organising libraries and building sites to creating and updating documents, pages, and HTML-based reports.
- Encode your team’s standards as shared skills and context, so Copilot in SharePoint follows the same playbook across the team.
- Help you keep SharePoint content structured, up to date, and governed to improve AI experiences across Microsoft 365.
According to Microsoft, who would use this, and what for?
- Site Managers: Maintain site health and relevance.
- Content Managers: Organise libraries and automate workflows.
- Content Creators: Build pages and FAQs with AI assistance.
- Content Consumers: Get instant answers and insights from your content.
Notes
- Copilot in SharePoint will run on OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 Reasoning model.
- The existing site agent experience will be upgraded to Copilot in SharePoint for Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users.
