Short Version

Custom skills are coming to AI in SharePoint, letting you teach the AI to carry out common business tasks in a consistent, repeatable way — no code needed. You can tailor AI behaviour to your own documents, standards, and processes, such as reviewing compliance documents or offer letters, thereby reducing manual effort and improving reliability. Due late May to early July 2026.

Details
Anyone with edit permissions on a SharePoint site can create custom skills using natural language within AI in SharePoint. Skills let you define reusable, multi-step AI instructions for everyday business tasks — for example, reviewing compliance documents or offer letters.

Microsoft provides this prompt as an example: “Create a skill to review legal contracts to verify whether contract documents mention a lawyer ID in the xxx-xxx format (where x is an alphanumeric character). If a contract is not valid, add the document name to the Invalid Contracts list. Create the list with relevant columns if it doesn’t exist.”

AI in SharePoint can automatically pick relevant skills from the current site based on your query, or you can invoke a skill by name. Skills are saved as Markdown (.md) files in the site’s Agent Assets library and are governed by your existing SharePoint permissions and compliance policies.

Skills reuse native AI capabilities in SharePoint, such as content understanding, list manipulation, and folder organisation. They can’t connect to external systems or run custom code. The feature is enabled by default, with no separate tenant-level on/off toggle.
