Do you have something to say about a video saved in OneDrive or SharePoint? You’ll soon be able to use the familiar Microsoft comments feature.

Short version:
This new feature allows you to have threaded conversations on a video or audio file saved in OneDrive or SharePoint. Due early to late February March April to May for most of us now due by late May 2022.

Details:
This feature allows you to have threaded conversations on a video or audio file saved in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint. The commenting experience is like the one used in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Once released, you will see a Comments button in the upper right-hand corner of any video or audio file stored in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online:

Selecting this button expands a panel where you can have threaded conversations, for which file owners have full edit permissions over.

Behind the scenes, this feature uses the same existing backend found in the details pane of some files saved in OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online:

Comments can be disabled by file editors and owners in a per-file basis through the Video Settings button above Comments as showning in the first image.

For the admins:
There is also an existing tenant level setting to disable comments (“CommentsOnFilesDisabled”). Due to the shared backend, this setting will disable both commenting features. Viewers without edit access have been given permission to add comments on both commenting options in video and audio files as they are usually meant to be consumed by viewers without edit access. However, Microsoft provide a SharePoint Online PowerShell command to change the behaviour so that only viewers with edit access can comment: “ViewersCanCommentOnMediaDisabled”. This will soon be added to the documentation linked above

Availability:
