TL;DR:
Microsoft have announced improvements to the search experience for chats and channels.  They include a search pane on the right, a ‘Find in channel’ button and improved result captioning/highlighting. Now due early to late October 2023.

Details:
The old way: you can still search using the Ctrl+F (win) or Cmd +F (Mac) shortcuts but the search experience will change.  On Windows, go to a channel, and press Ctrl+F (there will soon be a button for this) and you get this in the search/command bar at the top:

You can search just that channel and the results appear in the rail on the left (which hides your view of channels/chats – this is changing), note that Teams is not highlighting why it is showing this result (this is changing):

The experience in chat is similar.

Now let’s look at the improvements.

  1. Pressing Ctrl+F (win) or Cmd +F (Mac) will open the Search experience in the right handrail, meaning you can view search results and still view your channels/chats on the rail on the left:

Chat (this also works with popped-out chats):

Channels:

2. Hate keyboard shortcuts? There will be a new ‘Find in Channel’ button in the channel info pane:

3. Wondering why certain results are being shown when searching a chat or channel? The new experience will show a caption of the results and highlight the keyword you’ve searched on:
